Dr. Richard Martin Welch

Richard had a successful career as a research scientist with Burroughs Wellcome, retiring in 1996 at GlaxoWellcome. He specialized in drug metabolism, published over 50 scientific papers and was instrumental in the development of numerous drugs.

Richard was married to Marianna Leisenring for 63 years. They were founding members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Community, serving as an usher, helping with the 10th grade Confirmation candidates and RCIA. Richard also enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening and loved New York Mets baseball.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Marianna L. Welch; three children: Nancy and Dan Faith, Ronald and Dorothy Welch, and Karen and Travis Wilson, all of Raleigh; three grandchildren: Tyler Welch, Drew Faith and Sydney Wilson; three siblings: Marty and Charlotte Welch, of NY, Maureen Hoffmann and Wally Siefert, of Raleigh, and Cathy and John Elias, of FL; and by other family and friends, including Sue Sherry, of NV.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue). Family will receive friends 12 pm - 1 pm on Friday, May 12, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Community (11401 Leesville Road), with a Memorial Mass to begin at 1 pm. Committal services will immediately follow in the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park.

Richard gave to numerous organizations, in his memory, please give to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
