Raised in Glen Alpine, North Carolina, he attended Pfeiffer College and then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both his undergraduate and master’s degrees, and he was an avid Tarheel fan. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Human Services for his entire career, providing community-based services for people with intellectual disabilities.
He was happiest with his children and his grandsons, and he never missed a basketball, football, soccer, baseball game or concert with them. He loved studying Scripture, and especially enjoyed all of his years in Bible Study Fellowship in Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sybil Colclough Parker, in 2012, and he is survived by his daughter, Lisa Parker Whitfield, and son-in-law, Ralph Whitfield, of Raleigh; daughter, Lynn Parker Bolton, son-in-law, William Bolton, IV, and grandsons, William and Weslyn, of Raleigh; and son, Richard C. Parker, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Mala Parker, of Alexandria, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Heartland Hospice Services of Raleigh.
There will be a memorial celebration Thursday, March 1st at 2 p.m. in the Davidson Chapel at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, followed by a reception where the family will receive friends.
