I met Rhonda in the summer of 1983, in my own living room. My dad had just accepted the pastorate at Blacksburg First Wesleyan. District assembly was taking place nearby so my mom invited the Blacksburg delegation over for lunch. Rhonda was a delegate. She was beautiful and full of spit and fire.
We dated a little over 2 years. I graduated on a Saturday, turned 22 on Sunday. We married the following Saturday and move to Seattle Washington the Saturday after that. We were off on a grand adventure and explored as far and wide as the budget for a couple of early 20 somethings would allow.
We both grew up in the Wesleyan Church. But there were no Wesleyan churches in Raleigh. Having attended a Nazarene church in Seattle, we decided to try that here. What ensued was a host of life long, close and dear friendships.
In 1998 Jake came into our lives. Rhonda left the admin job she had to become a full time mother. She absolutely adored being a mother and poured herself into it with everything she had. Ben came to us in 2003. Went spent the ensuing 18 years living life, loving kids and traveling to a never ending string of soccer games and practices.
In 2017 at the time of Jake's graduation, I decided it was time for another adventure. Rhonda's bucket list top line was always Hawaii. I planned a trip. When we landed, I told her "Tag your it!". She took over and we had the most grandest of adventures. That will now be near the top of best memories.
She has been a loving mother, wife, daughter and friend. But absolutely most importantly she has for the entire time I have known her been the daughter of a great and powerful King. Tuesday that King welcomed his daughter home.
2 Timothy 4:7-8
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
