A memorial service will be held at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue) at 11 AM on Monday, November 15, 2010. Visitation with the family will follow.
Ray was born on December 30th, 1924 in Seven Springs, NC to Stacy R. and Louvenia W. Chesnutt. Following graduation from B.F. Grady High School, he attended NC State University in Electrical Engineering until he enlisted in the US Navy in 1943. He became a fire controlman in the submarine service and was stationed at the submarine base near Perth, Australia. While there he engaged in active duty at sea and also worked as a drafts man for the base commander.
After his discharge in August 1946, he returned to NC State for several months but was needed at home due to his father’s illness.
In the spring of 1951, he was recalled to submarine service and remained until the summer of 1952. The day he was discharged, he applied for work with IBM and was accepted. His occupation took him to Richmond, VA., Poughkeepsie, NY., and finally to Raleigh. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling, deep sea fishing, reading and the care of his much loved pet cats.
He is survived by Vicky, his wife of 61 years; a daughter, Judy and son-in-law Fred Murhammer, of Woodside, NY, plus many good friends.
