It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Prem Parkash Sehgal, a man whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to academia, a profound love for his family, and an enduring commitment to the environment. Dr. Sehgal was born in 1934, in Patiala, India, and was the eldest of six brothers and three sisters. Throughout his life, he remained a pillar of support and guidance for his siblings, always ready to offer his brotherly wisdom and love.
Dr. Sehgal's academic journey was nothing short of extraordinary. He commenced his educational pursuits at Delhi University, where he earned a Bachelor's of Science in Botany in 1954, followed by an M. Sc. in 1956. His passion for teaching led him to Agra University and Delhi University, where he shared his knowledge from 1956 to 1958. In 1958, he took a significant step by immigrating to the United States, where he continued his academic pursuits.
In 1961, Dr. Sehgal achieved a milestone by receiving his Masters in Biology from Harvard University. His quest for knowledge led him to Duke University, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1964, specializing in botanical biochemistry. During this time, he also served as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin from 1965 to 1966.
Upon his return to academia, Dr. Sehgal joined East Carolina University (ECU) in 1966, where he embarked on a passionate teaching journey. Over the years, he inspired countless students through courses in introductory biology, growth and development, plant hormones, and genetics. His dedication to research was remarkable, focusing on plant physiology. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as he served as the editor of the book, "Humanistic Aspects of Biology," published by the Department of Biology at ECU in 1983-1984. Dr. Sehgal's commitment to the environment and his dedication to research shaped the lives and careers of several students who passed through his classroom.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Sehgal was known for his enduring love for his family. In 1960, he married the love of his life ‘Jaan’, Nanda, marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership. His family was a source of immense joy, including his beloved wife, son, Ishan, daughter-in-law, Vanita, and a cherished granddaughter, Aneesha, whose laughter brought him happiness beyond measure.
In his later years, Dr. Sehgal faced the challenges of Parkinson's disease with unwavering bravery. . Throughout this difficult journey, he found serenity in the loving presence of his family during his final moments.
As we remember Dr. Sehgal, we honor his life and the legacy he leaves behind. His spirit is now free from life's trials and suffering, finding eternal serenity. Rest in peace, Dr. Prem Sehgal. Your memory lives on in the hearts of all who were touched by your wisdom, kindness, and love.
