Nathan Hewitt Berry, 61, passed away unexpectedly August 12, 2016 at his home of 10 years in Raleigh NC. He was born on February 24, 1955 in Charleston, SC to the late Captain Francis Joseph Berry and June Wilson Berry. Nate spent his childhood years in Virginia Beach VA and Arlington VA, graduating from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington VA. He attended one and a half years at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA, then began his career with the US Postal Service working in Merrifield VA, Sausalito CA, Belmar NJ and Fayetteville NC. For his last 10 years he worked at the Raleigh NC Processing & Distribution Center and had just received his 30 years recognition with the US Postal Service.
Nate enjoyed lake fishing, deep sea fishing, traveling both domestically and abroad by train, boat and air, sight-seeing and visiting with distant relatives and old friends, in many different cities and countries. Nate often provided his mother loving and wonderful companionship during her 10 years at Marian Manor Assisted Living Home in Virginia Beach VA. Nate travelled to Virginia Beach from Raleigh NC on many of his weekends and holidays and truly provided his mother great conversations with storytelling, movie watching, and assistance to a variety of activities, their favorite being the Bible sessions with Pastoral Counselor Keith Willyard. Nate was a kind and gentle soul, always generous and thoughtful to others.
Nate was a member of the National Rifle Association, and as a teenager achieved the prestigious status of Eagle Scout Rank in the Boy Scouts of America, earning 21 merit badges including some his favorites: archery, fishing, fly fishing, shotgun shooting, hiking and camping.
He is survived by his siblings: Matthew Berry of Destin, FL, Kathleen Brownell and husband Peter of Thornton, CO, Christopher Berry and wife Terry of Virginia Beach, VA, and Rebecca Kalibat and husband Peter of Princeton, NJ; by his nieces and nephews: Nolan and Sophie Berry of Destin FL, Frank Berry of Chicago IL, Andrew Berry of Summersville WV, Elizabeth, Meghan and Olivia Berry of Virginia Beach VA, Kristiana Kalibat of Gainesville FL, Natalie Kalibat of Morgantown WV, and Peter Kalibat of Washington DC.; and by other family and friends, including Mark Davis and wife Mary Kay of Holly Springs, NC.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Patrick Berry of San Francisco CA.
Memorial Mass will be held on Oct 15, 2016 at 11 am at Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington VA, with a reception following at the Saint Agnes Parish Center.
