A graduate of Needham Broughton High School, Nancy attended Converse College and graduated from UNC-Greensboro. She made her debut at the Terpsichorean Ball in 1939. She was a charter member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, a member of The Assembly, the Capital City Cotillion Club and the Carolina Country Club. She was an involved and caring grandmother, avid tennis player, and loved long walks on the beach. For many years she was employed by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, and also worked for the NC General Assembly.
She devoted her life to her husband and family and fought a courageous battle against Parkinson’s disease.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, S. Leigh Wilson; and her sister, Eloise Barwick Durrett.
She is survived by her two children, Stewart L. Wilson, Jr. and wife Marjorie of Raleigh, and Nancy W. McLendon and husband Chris of Washington, NC; five grandchildren, Lindsay Wilson Bennett of Raleigh, S. Leigh Wilson, III and wife Stephanie of Hoboken, NJ, Christopher (Kit) McLendon, Jr of Aspen, CO, Lennox (Knox) McLendon II of San Diego, CA, and Nancy Stewart McLendon of Jackson, WY; two great grandchildren; and nephews Van and Joe Durrett.
The family wishes to thank her many caregivers for years of love and support.
A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 2:00 pm at St. Michael’s Church with the interment to follow in the memorial garden. The family will receive friends in the parish hall following the service.
