Nancy Elizabeth Salkeld

Nancy was born on May 21st, 1932 in Manila, Philippines to the late James and Elizabeth Herdman. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Ross Salkeld, and her granddaughter Ruby Salkeld.

Nancy is lovingly remembered by her brother, James Ronald Herdman; her sister-in-law, Pat Salkeld; two sons, James Salkeld, and Glenn Salkeld; daughter, Barbara Bonin and her husband, Andrew Bonin: and daughter Patricia Salkeld; her grandchildren Jessie Torrey, Laura Putney, Julia Beeson, Anthony Bonin, and Roxanne Salkeld, who will always know her as "Nana,” as well as her several great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many other family members and friends who will dearly miss her.

Nancy married Ross at the age of 18, and shortly thereafter worked hard at home in the Los Angeles area, raising their four children. She was an organic gardener and grew an expansive garden with a variety of vegetables as well as plum, apricot, and peach trees, which she tended lovingly and whose fruit she canned summer after summer. She worked hard keeping the large yard, pool, and her family’s home in beautiful condition. Together, Ross and Nancy loved hosting big family barbecues and get-togethers at their home. These will always be remembered by her loved ones as some of the best times in their lives.

Nancy loved the mountains, specifically the Sierra Nevada range in California, including the Mammoth Lakes area, as well as the mountains and forests of Oregon. She loved visiting the Redwoods, the Sequoias, Yosemite and all the National Parks. Nature and wild animals were very important to her and she supported many environmental organizations. Nancy instilled in her children the love of gardening, nature, and the great outdoors.

She was also an avid reader of the Los Angeles Times. Those close to her were always impressed by her wealth of knowledge about plants, birds and other wildlife, as well as geography, history and current events. She also loved to read a variety of spiritual topics.

All who loved her will never forget her tenacity, dry wit, quiet charm and love for them – a love that became even softer, sweeter, and more demonstrative in recent years. Nancy is a beautiful example of how it's never too late for emotional growth, and love is what matters most. This is something that Nancy was not taught, but learned on her own, and in turn, showed her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the entire second floor staff of Magnolia Glen Assisted Living, to Transitions Life Care, and to her companion caregivers, Mary, Lisa and Zuwena for their kindness and care.

Nancy's ashes will be placed in her gravesite in Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, NC. A celebration of life will be held in December of 2019.
