Meeting in 1956, Martha taught a young man, Wiley Bond Jackson, how to dance and they were married six months later. They enjoyed 64 years as dance partners, being members of the Raleigh Shag Club, the Capitol Area Shag Club and the Eno Shag Club, just to name a few. They also participated on many a Dance Cruise, their favorite being the “Making Waves”.
Martha first worked in the Governor’s Office prior to NC State University as an administrative assistant. She retired in 1987 and began working for Price Waterhouse Cooper. She retired for the second time in 1998. Outside of work, Martha treasured her time spent with family. She so loved their annual family beach trips from when their son Chris was little to weekly visits to Wilmington to help care for her grandson, Tyson. Nothing was better than being his "granny". Family was always the most important thing for Martha.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Wiley Bond Jackson; by her son: Chris Jackson and wife Kristin, of Wilmington; and grandson: Tyson Jackson. She is survived by her sisters-in-law: Julia and Donna Freeman and all the extended Freeman Family, as well as her Jackson Family: Charles Jackson and wife Louise, of Raleigh, Donnie Jackson and wife Effie, of Raleigh, Tidus Jackson, of Virginia and Bobby Dillard of Raleigh and their families; and by numerous friends, including her lifelong friendship with Anne Canady, of Raleigh.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: William, Joe, Leslie and Lynn Freeman; and by a sister-in-law: Sue Dillard.
Family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-8 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 7th at 11 am in the funeral home chapel, with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
