He was born on November 2, 1940, in the Municipality of Dumarao, a small Provence of Capiz, Phillippines; he was the son of Magno and Remegia Cabrera-Gangoy.
Dr. “Leo” Gangoy is predeceased by his father, Magno Gangoy, his mother, Remegia Cabrera-Gangoy and in addition to, his son in law, Dr. Jeffrey L. Leonard.
Dr. “Leo” Gangoy is survived by his loving wife, Remedios (Medy) of 56 years. They were married at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Quezon City, Phillipines on June 4,1966.
Surviving Dr. Gangoy, in addition to his wife, Medy, are his daughters, Stella Friss and her husband David Friss of Charlotte North Carolina, Mary Anne Gangoy and her husband Stephen Engelson of Raleigh North Carolina ; Dr. Angel Gangoy-Leonard of Andover, Massachusetts; and his son, Mark Ian Gangoy of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and his two brothers, Candelario Gangoy and Giovanni Gangoy, both of Dumarao, Capiz, Phillippines; and many nieces and nephews.
Lovingly referred to as “Lolo” by his grandchildren, Dr. Gangoy will always be remembered, celebrated, revered and greatly missed by his seven grandchildren, Dylan (16 yrs), Matthew (14 yrs), Ethan (12 yrs), Alexis (11yrs), Christopher (10 yrs), Nathaniel (9 yrs), and Kaileah (6 yrs ).
Dr. Leo Gangoy was a graduate of Aznar Medical School in Cebu, Philippines and earned a Degree as a Doctor of Medicine in 1968. The following year, he and his family immigrated to the United States in order to begin a five year Surgical Residency at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center located in Brooklyn, New York. Upon receiving his Certificate in General Surgery, Dr. Gangoy was commissioned as a Lieutenant Medical Officer in the United States Navy. He relocated abroad with his family as he was called to active duty with the United States Naval Pacific Fleet, namely the Seventh Fleet. Dr. Gangoy honorably served his country as a Naval Officer and War Veteran. He eventually earned the Naval Insignia of a Ranking Senior Officer of Captain. On two separate occasions, CAPT. Gangoy served as the Commanding Medical Officer with the United States Seventh Fleet, aboard the USS Nimitz CUN-68 and USS Sylvania AFS-2. Once his active duty ended, he and his family returned to the United States, and resided in Albany, New York , at which time he joined the Medical Staff at Amsterdam General Hospital in Amsterdam, New York.
During the Gulf War, CAPT. Gangoy was once again called to Naval active duty and served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Dr. Gangoy spent his latter years enjoying retirement as a resident of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He embraced everyday and championed life in all regards. He will be always remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, avid tennis player, traveling aficionado, master gardener and fierce Disciple of God. The role he loved the most, was that of a grandfather and being “Lolo” to his grandchildren.
His children will forever be grateful for the many sacrifices he has made in order to provide them a beautiful life. Dr. Gangoy’s family will forever hold his memory close as it provides inspiration, hope and guidance in the days and bright future to come.
A private family viewing will be held in Raleigh North Carolina on Tuesday, September 1st, at Mitchell Funeral Home 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC.
A Mass of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, September 2nd at Saint Micheal The Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary, NC 27511.
Immediately following, he will be placed to rest in the Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC, where honors will be rendered by the United States Navy. Join the mass by live stream at https://livestream.com/stmichaelcary
