Jonathan Lynn McGee, devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend, completed his earthly journey suddenly on March 17, 2016. Born on June 29, 1969 in Raleigh, NC; he was the son of Betty Barbour McGee, of Raleigh and the late Billy Ray McGee.
Jonathan graduated from Enloe High School and was an Eagle Scout with Troop #236. He served honorably in the US Marine Corps. His last command was aboard the USS Essex-First Marine Division deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield in Somalia. He received Service Medals for National Defense, Armed Forces Expeditionary, Southwest Asia Service one Star, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
He returned from service, working at Wells Fargo and then on to Home Depot, where he has been a fixture in the Garden Section for over 15 years. He was a loyal employee who never liked even calling in sick, taking only perhaps five days off during his time there.
Jonathan was affectionately called “Pumpkin” by the love of his life, Patricia Dunleavy McGee. He in turn called her his “Sugar Muffin” and together they raised their cherished son, Jonathan “John” L. McGee, Jr. Calling his son his “little buddie”, father and son enjoyed many camping trips and the boy scouts together. Jonathan served as Assistant Scout Master to his son’s Troop #314.
Including his mother, wife and son; he is also survived by his brother, Jody and Jill McGee, of Raleigh; niece, Lauren McGee, of Raleigh; brothers-in-law: Mike Dunleavy of Raleigh, and Ken and Viktoriia Dunleavy, of Woodbridge, VA; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and an infant brother, Timothy McGee.
Family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue), with Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 2 pm at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (4801 Six Forks Road), officiated by Pastor Ben Williams. Interment, with Military Honors will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Raphael Catholic Church – Troop #314 – 5801 Falls of Neuse Road – Raleigh, NC 27609.
