John Alvin Englehardt, age 90, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Chattanooga, TN on March 5, 1933, the son of the late Marvin Alvin Englehardt and Julia Englehardt. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen Dorman Englehardt; daughter, Kathy Englehardt Fishel; grandson, Brandon Gregory Fishel and Alyssa Hamman; grandson, Austin John Fishel; son, Dr. John Mark Englehardt and his wife Gabrielle Audrey Schipprack; granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Englehardt; son, Dr. Robert Alan Englehardt and his wife Elizabeth Marie Englehardt; granddaughter, Mary Kate Lindsay Englehardt and step-grandson, John Chris Johnson, IV. He is also survived by his sister, Julia Ann Ludwig, of Salisbury, MD; brother- and sister-in-law Thomas Emory Dorman and Shirley Dorman of Auburn, Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his brother-in-law Don Knox Ludwig of Salisbury, MD; brother- and sister-in-law Carl Dorman, Jr. and Betty Dorman of Clayton, Alabama; nephew, Jim Dorman.
John attended Chattanooga High School followed by the University of Tennessee. He transferred to Auburn University graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member and vice-president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Upon receiving his degree, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering and immediately reported to active duty.
Upon release from the Army, his engineering profession included positions at the Nuclear Division of Combustion Engineering (Chattanooga, TN), Chrysler Corporation Space Division (Huntsville, AL), Monsanto (RTP, NC), Burroughs Welcome Co. (RTP, NC and Greenville, NC), and a consultant position with Biogen (RTP, NC).
John was a sailor at heart who only resorted to engine power when advanced age demanded. He and his family enjoyed many years on the lakes and coastal waters of North Carolina. If not sailing, he was often found at his work bench repairing and creating.
John and Kathleen have been long time members of White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. John served on the “Witness to the Resurrection” committee for many years and especially enjoyed the Tuesday morning men’s breakfast and the “Three Years of Disciple” classes.
His kindness, gentle spirit and love of family will be remembered by all that knew him.
A graveside service was held on March 29, 2023, at Raleigh Memorial Park, Raleigh, NC 27612.
