John was born in Kingston, NY on June 15th, 1952. He graduated from Rondout Valley High School.
After leaving the Navy, he enjoyed hitchhiking across the country. When returning home, he met the love of his life, Diane.
John was married to Diane (Lasher) on February 19th, 1978. They were married for 45 years.
John worked as an electrician for Wake County Government for nearly 30 years until his retirement. He was the author of 3 books “Kerouac: Visions of Lowell”, “Kerouac: Visions of Rocky Mount”, and “Milkman’s Matinee”. He enjoyed playing the guitar, listening to music, reading, and collecting rare first-edition books. John was instrumental in having Jack Kerouac inducted into the Rocky Mount Hall of Fame.
John is survived by his wife, Diane, his daughters, Jolie (Andy) Medlin, Jamie (Matt) Gasparini, and his two grandsons Connor and Drew Medlin. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane Kern, Susan (Reidar) Alecca, Patricia (Anthony) Cambria, and Rose (George) Ludena along with all his nieces and nephews.
The celebration of life will be held at Soapstone United Methodist Church,12837 Norwood Road, Raleigh, NC 27613, at 2:00 pm on Monday, March 6th.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Soapstone United Methodist Church (https://soapstoneumc.org/) or Duke Cancer Institute (https://dukecancerinstitute.org).
