James Howard Prince, 90, of Raleigh died Friday, February 28, 2014. Jim was born in Antreville, SC; he was the son of the late James Irvin Prince and Elsa Crowther Prince. He graduated from Clemson University and was an avid Clemson supporter and sports fan for the rest of his life. Jim was a Civil Engineer with the NC Dept. of Transportation for many years, and on March 14, 1953 he married his beloved wife, Silma "Sibby" Lee Cox Prince, who survives him.
In addition to his devoted wife Sibby, Jim is survived by his two granddaughters, Michelle and Dana Verhoeven. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jan Verhoeven.
Jim loved to garden and plant flowers; doing wood working and travel. He and Sibby traveled a great deal in Europe and most of the United States. He loved the Raleigh Civitan Club from which he was a long-time member. Jim was a World War II veteran, serving in the 269th Field Artillery Battalion of the US Army. Jim survived numerous battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a faithful member, and long- time usher at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church; a member of the United Methodist Men; and the Wesleyan Sunday School Class at Hayes Barton.
Most of all Jim was noted for his dry wit, and his love for his family and church.
A funeral service will be held Monday, March 3rd at 1:00pm at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park following the service.
Thanks to the staff on the 600’s hall and memory care unit at Unihealth Post-Acute Care of Raleigh, as well as a very special thanks to Ms. Veronica Wilds for the special care she has given Jim and Sibby for the past 4 years.
