He was retired from Special Forces and loved tending his garden. He had a great faith in God and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his twin brother John Ashford Manning and sister Martha Manning Dunn.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah; son, James McCotter Manning Jr. and 3 grandchildren, Sarah Cothran Manning, James McCotter Manning III and Caroline Hensley Manning.
A funeral service was held on Friday, April 7, 2023 in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, Raleigh. Burial with full military honors followed at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Providence Baptist Church or The Alzheimer's Association.
