He was preceded in death by his father and mother; Troy and Katie Bell Baker, and his brother, Troy Baker Jr.
James graduated from Needham Broughton High school in 1956, after which he enlisted in the USAF. James served his country in the Air Force as a flight mechanic E-4, from which he was honorably discharged in 1962. After studying Electrical Engineering at NC State, James pursued a rewarding career as an EE at IBM. After 30 years, James retired and reignited his lifelong love for wood working.
James was a man of many talents and was an avid outdoorsman, he made friends easily, and was well loved and respected by his friends and colleagues.
James is survived by his loving wife Frances Hinnant Baker, his sons, Michael Baker and Scott Baker and his wife Lauren, granddaughter Isabelle, and stepson Ken Narron.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 7, from 6-8:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh 27612. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 8 at the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
