Pete was born in Anderson, South Carolina on November 10, 1938. He graduated from Anderson Boys High School and went on to earn his bachelors degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He was married to Myrtle Ann Goodwin of Raleigh until her death from leukemia in 1968. He married Susan Butler of Charlotte in 1972. In 1988 he married Carolyn Lusk and they were together 30 years until her death in 2019.
Pete was a CPA and worked in various positions as an accountant or financial officer for several companies first in Charlotte then in Raleigh. He enjoyed golf, boating and fishing and cheering on his beloved UNC Tarheels. He was an active member and former president of North Ridge Country Club. He also served on the board of Wake Enterprises.
Pete is survived by his brother Steve Fortner of La Place, Louisiana and his daughter with his first wife Myrtle Ann: Dare Gura, her husband Dan Gura and their daughters Ava and Caroline of Hillsborough, North Carolina. His wife, Carolyn, had three children from a previous marriage Mary Ard, Scott Lusk and Dana Wells. They blessed Pete with grandchildren Andrew and Timothy Ard, Sydney Lusk, and Zachary and Tyler Wells.
Pete is preceded in death by his father Fate Fortner, his mother Omie Fortner and his brothers Fate Jr., Oscar, Wayne and sister Joan as well as his first wife Myrtle Ann and third wife Carolyn.

A celebration of life will be held for Pete from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 5801 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Following the celebration of life, a reception will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2022 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.
