George Medina, 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, June 25, 2017 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. He was born on March 24, 1930 in Littlefield, TX to the late Leon and Ruth Gomez Medina. George served honorably in the US Air Force, enlisting in 1949. He was stationed to Ft. Warren in Wyoming from 1949-1951, Far East Command (Japan) from 1951-1954, and Deep Creek Air Base in Washington State from 1954-1961. He received his GED and went on to attend Washington State University.
He met and married Ashton Johnson Medina and together they raised their family, living in San Francisco. While there, he was a candidate for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (city council). George retired from the import/export business in Oakland, California in order to be a caregiver for his daughter. After moving to Raleigh in 2003, George quickly became involved in community activities, including the Republican Party and especially the local chapter of the Air Force Association.
George is preceded in death by his daughter Shirlee Ashton Medina. George is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ashton Johnson Medina; son Michael Medina and wife Catherine, of Cary; grandson Patrick Medina; siblings Jose Medina, Helen Picon and Maryann Medina; and by many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Family will receive friends on Friday, June 30, 2017 from 10 am until 11 am at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue), with Funeral Services to begin at 11 am in the funeral home chapel. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
