Garland Scott Tucker, Jr., died on Friday, October 18, 2013, in Raleigh. The son of the late Toler Moore Tucker and Garland Scott Tucker, he was born on July 27, 1919, in Raleigh. He was educated in Raleigh city schools, Virginia Episcopal School, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the family furniture business in 1941 and moved to Wilson in 1942 to manage company stores in Eastern North Carolina. He served as President of the company until his retirement in 1985. He was active in many business, civic and religious organizations. In addition to actively serving the First Methodist Church and the Wilson Rotary Club, he was Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board for many years and joined the Raleigh board of the Salvation Army after returning to Raleigh to live in 1996.
He joined the Board of Directors of BB&T in 1954 and subsequently served as Chairman of the Board from 1979 until his retirement from the Board in 1994. He was also active for many years at the local, national, and international levels of Gideons International, where he served on the Finance Committee and the International Extension Committee. His international responsibilities with the Gideons included overseeing the distribution of Bibles in 25 European and Carribbean countries.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Jean Smith Barnes and their four children and their spouses: Garland Scott Tucker, III, and wife Greyson Shuff Tucker; Edwin Davis Barnes Tucker, and wife Nancy Wilson Tucker; Macon Tucker Newby and husband Paul Martin Newby; and Sarah Tucker Knott, and husband Joseph T. Knott, III.
He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren: Greyson Tucker Vaughn, Elizabeth Tucker Koch, Edwin Barnes Tucker, Leigh Tucker Thomas, Mary Eleanor Tucker, Samuel Scott Newby, Ruth Barnes Newby, Peter Martin Newby, Sarah Frances Newby, Anna Macon Knott, Sarah Katherine Knott, Mary Garland Knott, Joseph Tucker Knott, John Bradford Knott, and Thomas Robertson Knott. Three great grandchildren also survive: Samuel Turner Vaughn, Greyson Carrington Vaughn, and Elizabeth Douglas Vaughn.
He was predeceased by his three sisters: Frances Tucker Levy, Sue Tucker Yates, and Janet Tucker Walker.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Baptist Church, 400 Newton Road, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, preceded by private burial at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
