Eddie Vance Smith 86, of Raleigh, a retired mail carrier with the US postal Service, died Monday, February 28, 2011. Eddie was born in Warren County on August 26, 1924, the sixth child born to the late Lettie Choe Wright and Joe Basket Smith
Eddie was a graduate of Louisburg High School. Eddie enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 7, 1943 where he served his county during WWII with the 87th Infantry Division, Battery B 334 Field Artillery Battalion, Code name the Golden Acorn Division. He was wounded and taken prisoner 16 days before the end of the war. He received the Purple Heart with the Bronze Oak leaf Cluster for his injuries. He also received the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Eddie was an active member for a long time with the Ostomy Association of Raleigh. Eddie was an ileostomate himself.
Eddie was preceded in death not only by his parents, but also by two sisters, Margie S. Wrenn, and Sadassa S. Fulcher, and two brothers James Hampton Smith and Joseph John Smith. Surviving Eddie are his wife Alice Muriel Watkins Smith of Raleigh who he married on March 22, 1946; sister, Pauline S. Herzler of Kokomo, IN. and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Monday, March 7, 2011 in the Wynne Center at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 St. Mary’s St. with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 pm prior to the service.
