Don was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years: Carolyn Causey Phillips; parents: Brinkley Street Phillips and Mary Jane Mills Phillips; brother: Terry Phillips (Kaye); brothers-in-law: Billy Shoffner and Jerry Cooke. He is survived by his daughters: Rhonda Newton (Billy) and Doris Dalton; granddaughters: Allyssa and Jordan Newton, Abby Tredway (Scott); great grandson: Kane Tredway; sisters: Jane Shoffner, Jean Cooke, Joyce Clarke (Steve); brother: Mike Phillips (Melba). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and long-time friends.
Don loved his family, friends, colleagues and customers. He was a dedicated man and adhered to a strong work ethic. He began his career in the retread tire business by working in the warehouse at Long Mile Rubber Company. His success led him from Greensboro, NC to Raleigh, NC to pursue outside sales positions for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Target Tire. Don worked for Southeastern Wholesale Tire in Raleigh up until the day he passed away. He was recognized throughout his career for his hard work, which included the “Friend of the Industry” award given by the NC Tire Dealers Association in 2019. Don also served 8 years in the Army National Guard.
Outside of work, Don enjoyed traveling with his family and friends. Some of his interests included bowling, golfing and playing gin at the 19th hole at North Ridge Country Club. He was known as “one heck of a gin player” and enjoyed his weekly card games with his club buddies, “The Morons”.
In lieu of flowers and to encourage further research and a cure for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and cancers of the bone marrow, contributions can be made to the UNC Health Foundation, 123 West Franklin Street, Suite 510, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 in memory of Don Phillips. A visitation will be held at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609 on Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 4 to 6 pm to remember the lives of both Don and Carolyn Phillips, as they are now reunited in Heaven to continue their love story.
