Daniel Elmer Brown, “Dr. Dan”, 84, passed away from a long battle of multiple diagnoses on July 11, 2023 under the care of the kind staff at the Hospice House. He was born June 6th, 1939, in Durham, NC, the son of Elmer G. Brown and Connie Belle (Kornegay) Brown.
Dan graduated from Selma High School, Class of 1957. He then graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) with a BA in 1961. From there, he graduated from Medical School at UNC-CH in 1965. While completing medical school, he married his wife of almost 59 years, Barbara Ann (Poag) Brown in 1964. After medical school, Dan completed his pediatric internship and residence at the University of Florida. He then served at March Air Force Base in California from 1968-1970. In 1970, Dan joined Blue Ridge Pediatrics with Drs. Poole, Winslow, and Brown until he retired in 2004. Dan was a devoted Christian and served in many capacities in his church homes in Raleigh including Hayes Barton Baptist and Providence Baptist Churches. He served with the Bible Study Fellowship as a Teaching Leader and then as the Area Advisor. He continued his ministries outside of the church with many mission trips in Africa and other countries through the Christian Ministries of World Medical Missions/Samaritan’s Purse and the Rafiki Foundation, Inc. He served as a leader and advisor with his daughter, Ginger, in her 11 years of coordinating her Celebrate Jesus gatherings. Dan was loved by many, through his pediatric practice as well as his church community. He also loved his alma mater, UNC-CH and was a big Tarheel fan. He loved to attend basketball and football games to cheer his Tarheels on.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Daniel Elmer Brown, Jr. Surviving in addition to his wife, Barbara, are his daughters, Deborah Kaye Brown, Jennifer Brown Kaczynski and her husband, Scott of Fleetwood, NC, and Virginia Leigh Brown; 2 grandchildren, Benjamin Daniel Kaczynski and Sophia Belle Kaczynski; one sister, Betty Brown Kirby; and two nephews, Michael Barfield Kirby, his wife Julie and their children, Brian Bennet Kirby, his wife, Celeste and their children.
A time for visitation with the family will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 15th, 2023 with a service of remembrance directly following at 11:00 AM, at Providence Baptist Church at 6339 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, NC 27612. Interment will be at Raleigh Memorial Park at 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, North Carolina 27612 on Monday, July 17th at 10:00 AM.
