He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, to parents D D Williams and Martha Jones Williams. He spent his childhood years in Brazil and Florida. D has kept in touch with relatives in Brazil and, after developing an interest in genealogy, researched and authored an extensive family tree and family history.
After serving in the military, D graduated from Harvard University. He was employed for many years as a market analyst at the Raleigh Westinghouse meter plant, where he created computer programs forecasting meter sales.
D enjoyed music, as a keyboard artist in a jazz group, and as a supporter and historian of the local jazz community. He was an enthusiastic backstage worker at the Raleigh Little Theater for many productions. D's activities also included participation on the board of The Cinema, Inc. and writing occasional reviews for the News and Observer and Downbeat Magazine. D restored an antique Rolls Royce car, and served for many years as secretary of the Rolls Royce Owners Club. He was also active in the local Harvard Club.
He is survived by his children Ellen Leff and husband Herbert of Burlington, Vermont, Evelyn Durmaz of Cary, Carol Atwood of Raleigh, and John Williams and wife Stacey of Apex; grandchildren Ayse Durmaz, Filiz Durmaz and partner Glenn Weinstein, Chris Leff and wife Alison Maynard, and Laura Williams; and great grandchildren Ezra and Aria Leff.
