Charlie Clifton Finch, Jr., 69, of Raleigh and Morehead City NC died Monday. Charlie was the loving husband to Mary Ann Hamm Finch of 45 years. A native of Henderson, NC, Charlie was the son of the late Charlie C. Finch and Margaret Floyd. He graduated from Henderson High School, Louisburg College and East Carolina University School of Business. Charlie went to work in Williamston, NC, for VEPCO as its commercial and agricultural representative, moving up to become recruiting supervisor in the Richmond, VA office.
He began his career with Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation in Raleigh as an administrative assistant, becoming the chief administrative officer and manager of member relations. In 1998 he became managing director of the Burley Stabilization Corporation in Knoxville TN. Charlie has been a member of several influential tobacco organizations, such as the Tobacco Industry Leadership Group and the Duke Homestead and Tobacco Museum. He was a member of the policy development board of the North Carolina Cooperative Council, also inducted by NC State University as a Tobacco Great.
Throughout his career Charlie was a world traveler visiting over 30 different countries. In the past Charlie had been active in several community organizations. He was honored by Sertoma International with its Centurion Award for outstanding community service through the Durham chapter, in which he was president and vice president. He was president, vice president and secretary of the Williamston Chapter of the Jaycees, and received the Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award in 1972 to recognize his community service contributions. In Durham, Charlie was a member of the board of the Salvation Army Boys Club. He had recently been enjoying retirement with his wife in Morehead City, NC.
Survivors include his wife Mary Ann; his three sons, John Kevin Finch and his wife Julie Becker Finch of Kerrville, TX; Charlie Clifton Finch III of Knoxville, TN; and Brian Christopher Finch and Lynn Headley, of Raleigh. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Harper Headley Finch of Raleigh, Wyatt Harrison Finch and Alexandria Kate Finch of Kerrville TX; his mother-in-law, Juanita Hamm of Raleigh; brother-in-law, Chuck Hamm of Macon, GA; and sister-in-law, Susan Hamm Schoonderwoerd of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends Friday, November 2nd, from 6-8 pm, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh, and other times at 4639 Edwards Mill Road. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, November 3, 11:00 am at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home's Wynne Center. Burial will follow the service.
