Catherine Morris Clark

Catherine Morris Clark, 98, from Winston Salem, died Sunday November 11 2018, at home in Raleigh, where she lived the last five years. She was born in Stanley, North Carolina, on September 26 1920, to the late Vincent Quincy Morris and Margaret Belle Bumgardner Morris.

After graduating from Appalachian State Teachers College she and her husband, Garnet Clark moved to Bremerton Washington, where she became a teacher while he was in the navy and was shipped out to the South Pacific. After his service they moved back to North Carolina and after having two children she began working as a teacher again. In Winston-Salem she taught at Central, Forest Park and Waughtown Junior High (which became Hill High.) She earned a master's degree at UNC-G, after which she became a guidance counselor.

A member of Southside Baptist Church for more than 60 years she was a Sunday School teacher, deacon, Bible School worker, home bound volunteer, and choir member. She helped with the production of the “live nativity scene” at Christmas, and also with the children’s F.R.O.G. (afterschool) ministry which stands for “Fully Relying On God.”

She was preceded in death by her husbands Garnet Clark, Bill Good, and Mac McClelland; and by all seven of her brothers and sisters as well as their spouses.

Catherine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Wayne Rettinger, of Raleigh; son and daughter-in-law, Ewel and Carolyn Clark, of Lexington; five grandchildren, Jason Clark of Mt. Airy, David McClelland (Laura) of Raleigh, Adam McClelland (Rachel) of Brooklyn, Brittany Clark of Davidson County, and Kristin Smith (Mike) of Davidson County; ten great-grandchildren, Trenton Clark, Abby Clark, Aubriella Browne, Joshua Browne, Gabe Noel, Emry McClelland, Molly McClelland, Billie Jean Lehrer, Evan Tuttle, & McKenzie Smith; numerous nieces and nephews from both the Morris and Clark families; as well as step-sons, step-daughters and numerous step-grandchildren from the Good and McClelland families.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Griffith Baptist Church,1987 Old Salisbury Road, Winston-Salem, with visitation following the service.
