Carolyn Thornton Stone passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 at home with loved ones at her side. She was born September 27, 1938 in Newton Grove, North Carolina, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rossie Thornton. She graduated from Barton College in 1960. After graduating, she pursued a career as a teacher, while moving around with her husband as he attended dental / orthodontic school. She taught elementary education in Long Beach, California, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Louisville, Kentucky and Alexandria, Virginia. She had a passion for teaching and helping children. Carolyn was a member of Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church for 45 years where she loved teaching Sunday school and attending bible study. Carolyn was an avid gardener and a member of Seed and Sod garden club. She also enjoyed reading, writing, traveling, but most of all spending time with her beloved family, especially her 6 grandchildren who called her “Nonni”.
Carolyn was born into a loving family, one of eight brothers and sisters. Carolyn was preceded in death by her brothers, Cecil Thornton and Richard Thornton and sister, Jean Thornton Johnson.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Arthur Campbell Stone of Raleigh; her son, Arthur Campbell Stone, Jr. of Seattle, Washington; her son, Craig Campbell Stone and wife Stephanie Slade Stone of Raleigh; and her daughter, Susan Stone Hoover and husband Carlton Brevard Hoover of Charlotte; and her six grandchildren, Campbell, James, Taylor, Maya, Beck and Slade. She is also survived by Hazel Thornton, Marie Hill, Mary John Thornton, Wendell and Linda Thornton, Kenneth and Linda Joie Thornton, Marshall and Sue Warren. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered by family and friends.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road, Raleigh, NC 27608 on Monday, October 30th at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina; Band Together of NC, or St. Jude’s Children’s Research hospital in Carolyn’s name.
