Carolyn Willis Cunningham

Carolyn Willis Cunningham, the daughter of David and Esther Willis, died, Monday, July 7, 2014. She was born in New Bern, NC, July 20, 1920. She resided at Springmoor Life Care Community, Raleigh, NC. She was pre-deceased by her parents Esther G. and David S. Willis, her husband Henry V. Cunningham and her brother Thomas G. Willis and his wife Betty Ruth.

Surviving are her sons, Henry V. Cunningham, Jr. and his wife Sallie, David W. Cunningham and his wife Elizabeth, four grandchildren, Henry V. Cunningham, III and his wife Meredith, Sarah C. Cunningham, Pearson W. Cunningham, Rishton S. Cunningham, great grandson Henry V. Cunningham, IV, one brother David S. Willis, Jr. and his wife Eleanor, and many nieces and nephews.

She moved from New Bern to Raleigh in 1935 and graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1937 and from Woman’s College of the University of NC in 1941, now UNCG with a B.S. degree in InstitutionalManagement. After graduating from "W.C.", she went to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI, and served an internship in hospital dietetics. After completing her internship, she worked as a dietician at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem from 1942-1949. From 1948-1949, she was head of Dietary Department. During her years at Baptist Hospital, she was active in the N.C. Dietetic Association and the American Dietetic Association. After her marriage, she and her husband lived in Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC, before moving to Raleigh in 1961. She was for many years an active member of Edenton St. United Methodist Church, The Cokesbury-Isley Class, The NC Museum of Art, The Raleigh Fine Arts Society and the Heritage Book Club. After to moving to Springmoor in 2002, she served on the Health Committee and chaired the Food Committee. In 2007, she served as President of the Springmoor Residents Association.

A memorial service will be held, at 10:30am, Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC. Visitation will be immediately following the service in the Poindexter Building adjoining the church.
