Basil Lee Severt, age 88, former Research Technician in Animal Science at North Carolina State University, passed away on Monday, February 14, 2022 at Transitions LifeCare. Born on June 26, 1933 in Ashe County, NC (raised in Allegany County, NC); he was the son of the late Edward R. Severt and Carrie Miller Severt.
He graduated from Sparta High School and served honorably in the US Army - Korean Conflict. Basil met his wife, Ann Whittington shortly after his return to the United States. They married on June 11, 1958 in Wilkes County, NC. Together they relocated to Raleigh in August of that year so that Basil could begin working at NC State with Professor Dick Myers in Dairy Cow Science. After 38 years, he retired in 1995.
Basil and Ann welcomed a son, Basil Kenneth Severt on October 24, 1959. The family enjoyed trips to the beach and mountains and Basil enjoyed dove and deer hunting with Professor Myers, who along with his family, became close friends.
Basil is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Whittington Severt; brother: Wayne Severt (Ruth); sister: Marge Jarvis (the late Ernest "Shake"); nephew: Alan Jarvis (the late Kelly) and son Ethan; nephew: Frank Severt (Helen) and Roy Severt (Missy) and son Jonah; nephew: Raymond Richardson (Abby) and other family and friends, including his Whittington Family.
He was preceded in death by his son: B. Kenneth Severt in 2017 and siblings: Gladys Taylor (the late Ed) and Mary Richardson (the late Hubert Wagoner); niece: Juanita Bell (the late David); and nephew: Don Richardson (surviving wife, Pam Richardson).
A Light Reception will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2022 from 1-2 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, with a Memorial Service to begin at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel. Military Honors will be rendered by the US Army. The service will be recorded and posted afterwards for those not able to attend.
