Andrew B. (Ben) Snellings, 86, loving husband and friend, passed away on April 14, 2014 in Raleigh, NC. A native of Fredericksburg, VA, he lived there and in Sarasota, Punta Gorda, and Palm Beach, FL; as well as British Honduras (now Belize) before settling in Raleigh in 1978. He worked primarily in real estate development, beginning as a sales person in 1956 and also serving as a broker, investor and owner of warehouses and apartment complexes.
Predeceased by his lovely wife of 44 years, Geraldine H. Snellings, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew B. Snellings, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Emily Snellings of Richmond, VA, and by his close friends, Dr. Jack Coffey, Mrs. Shirley Keener, Ed and Winn Coleman, all of Raleigh.
Snellings accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior when he was 14 years old. Known for his love for the Lord and his desire for everyone to hear about Jesus Christ, he created the Chair of Christian Evangelism and Missions at Campbell University Divinity School, Buies Creek, NC, where he served on the Presidential Board of Advisors. In addition, he and Mrs. Snellings have created scholarships at Campbell Divinity School and Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA.
As a person who knew what it was like to be down to $25 without a roof over his head, Snellings was profoundly generous to those in need. His gentle spirit and kind heart touched a myriad of persons in very quiet ways. He honored many of his closest friends with gifts to humanitarian causes in their honor.
Snellings was a graduate of Wittenburg University, Springfield, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in American History and Government. He was a lifelong student, always reading the daily newspaper with a dictionary and atlas. In addition to his real estate work, he served in the Naval Submarine Corps in World War II, taught high school in Fredericksburg, worked as a flight attendant for American Airlines, worked for a law firm, and served as a civil service investigator.
Cremation arrangements handled by L. Harold Poole Funeral Services and a Memorial service will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, on Thursday, April 24th at 11 am in our chapel. In lieu of flowers, Snellings requested that donations be made to the Andrew B. (Ben) and Geraldine (Geri) Snellings Divinity School Scholarship, Campbell University Divinity School, P. O. Drawer 4050, Buies Creek, NC 27506. Arrangements by Brown-Wynne, Millbrook.
