Alice Cheshire Haywood

Alice Cheshire Haywood, died Sunday, November 2, 2014. Born March 15, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Colonel and Mrs. Godfrey Cheshire and the wife of the late Henry Dockery Haywood. All were lifelong residents of Raleigh. She was also a granddaughter of the late Episcopal Bishop, the Right Reverend Joseph Blount Cheshire, Jr.

Long an active member of Christ Church, Mrs. Haywood served in many capacities, chairing many committees, and was the first female Senior Warden. Many years ago, she worked tirelessly to help start the New Bern Avenue Day Care Center, the first in North Carolina that was free for very poor families so that the mothers could work, and later she worked to help establish Wake Relief, Inc. to feed and clothe those in dire need of assistance. For her long history of service to the church, she was awarded the first Christ Church Cross in 2003.

She was also a member of the Johnsonian Book Club, founded in 1895, the Modern Minerva Book Club, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Junior League of Raleigh, and the Rex Hospital Guild. She was also previously named an Honorary Chairman of Terpsichorean Debutante Ball. Mrs. Haywood was a graduate of St. Mary’s Junior College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She is survived by her five children, Alice Haywood Robbins of Pinehurst, Frances Haywood Bullock of Greensboro, Henry Dockery Haywood, Jr. and Nancy Grimes Haywood of Raleigh, and Sarah Haywood McInnis of Little River, SC. She is also survived by her four grandsons, Phillip Wayne Robbins, Jr., Henry Haywood Robbins, Frank William Bullock, III, and John McLeod McInnis, III and a great grandson, Henry Hamilton Robbins. She is also survived by her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Cheshire, Jr. and a sister, Mrs. John C. Dockery, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC. Loving caretakers, Shanna Jett and Joyce Githinji, also survive. She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Charles M. de la Vergne.

The family is at her home. A funeral service will take place Wednesday, November 5 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 East Edenton Street, with burial following at Oakwood Cemetery.
