Settle grew up in Rockingham, NC, the adored only child of Virginia Allen Dockery and Alfred Settle Dockery, Jr. He loved growing up in a small southern town and kept in close touch with his childhood friends all his life, as well as with his high school football coach, Bill Eustler, whom he revered.
He graduated from the School of Design at NC State University. While there he played football on the Wolfpack teams that won an ACC Championship and the 1967 Liberty Bowl; was a member of the highest-ranked team in school history (#3 in 1967) and scored a touchdown in the first Wolfpack victory at Carter Stadium. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and treasured the life-long friendships he made with his KA brothers.
Settle began his professional career as a landscape architect, first in Fort Lauderdale, FL and then in Raleigh, NC, where he was a partner with Dockery, Hunter, Reynolds & Jewell landscape design firm. He later became involved in real estate development in Raleigh with Martin Development Group and as a partner with York Ventures. He loved his work and those he worked with and took great pride in developing projects that enhanced the quality of life in Raleigh. He was involved in the community in many volunteer capacities, including as a member of the original Raleigh Greenway Commission and most recently as a member of the Raleigh Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
Settle was a kind and gentle man with an optimistic, happy, good-natured spirit. He was funny, artistic and creative and was deeply loved. He cherished his family and is survived by his wife and best friend of 45 years, Margaret Mustard Dockery; his daughter, Virginia (Jenna) Dockery Webb and her husband, William Woodward (Woody) Webb, Jr. and his grandchildren, Anna Settle Webb, William Woodward Webb, III and Margaret Carson Grimes Webb, all of Raleigh.
Our family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Transitions LifeCare for their superb care of Settle during his stay, as well as our steadfast friends who so lovingly supported us during his illness.
