Alan Lewis Carroll

Alan Lewis Carroll, 83, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2021 surrounded by his family. Alan was the youngest of 6 children, born to the late Lewis Jerry and Evelyn Carroll [McDermott] on December 2, 1937 in Cape Vincent, NY. Alan graduated from the Albany College of Pharmacy in 1960, where he met his future wife, Judy Franco. They wed in 1961 and had 2 children. As registered pharmacists, they owned and operated Chenango Pharmacy, a legacy passed down from Judy’s father [James Franco], in Chenango Bridge, NY from 1961-1978. In 1978, the family relocated to Raleigh, NC where he and Judy worked for several pharmacies over the years.

During his career, Al loved his ability to help others through a simple cold or life-changing event. His selflessness, kindness and determination gave him the platform to serve others as a friend and mentor to all, including the next generation of pharmacists to come. He has inspired others to lead by his example in all aspects of life, from asking others what we can do for them to finding a way to bring a smile to someone’s face in the darkest of times.

After Al retired in 2015, he turned his caring attentions to family and friends. His love of cooking filled the kitchens with delicious aromas as he passed down family recipes to his granddaughters. Though, it can be argued that his trips to Cherokee, NC in the mountains with Judy topped his list each month for pure pleasure. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and NC State fan, Al always found a way to see the beauty in each sunrise.

Alan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy [Franco] Carroll, son and daughter-in-law of Raleigh, NC, James and Christine Carroll, daughter and son-in-law of Hendersonville, NC, Laurie Carroll and William Scott Varner, and granddaughters of Hendersonville, NC, Kimberly and Allison Varner. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to St. Jude's Children's Hospital at www.stjude.org
