Ark Hop Jew passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019. He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Yuk Ming; daughters Catherine, Karen, Madeline, and Jenny; and grandchildren Margaret, Julia, Henry, and Myles.
Ark was born on August 2, 1937 in Hoiping, China and immigrated to the United States at the age of 13. Ark was known to many as Richard Joe, an “American” name that was given to him when he enrolled in school. He graduated from Boston Trade High School in 1958, where he studied Radio Mechanics and was recognized as having a talent for Electronics. In the 1960s, Ark served in the U.S. Army on active duty and as a reservist; he began as a Company Clerk and attained the rank of Specialist 5. After the army, Ark joined his father working in his family’s restaurant. His career in the restaurant industry spanned more than thirty years and included opening his own restaurant in 1984.
Throughout his life, Ark demonstrated his commitment to his family through his hard work and many sacrifices. He instilled strong family values in his children and taught them the importance of education, dedication to family, and honor. After putting their four children through college, Ark and Yuk Ming sold the restaurant and retired. Ark’s love of food kept him in the kitchen in retirement. He especially enjoyed preparing family dinners every weekend. Ark and his wife also turned their focus to home improvement projects, weekly dim sum socials, and caring for their grandchildren. As an avid fan of Boston sports, Ark was finally able to spend time watching his favorite teams on television and relished trips to Fenway Park, a place he remembered fondly from his childhood.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 20, 5:00 pm-8:00 pm at Deware Funeral Home, 576 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA. Funeral services will be on Friday, June 21 beginning at 10:00 am at the funeral home, followed by a procession to Forest Hills Cemetery.
