He was the son of Willie L. and Agnes S. (nee McDiarmid) Jones and born on July 21, 1933, in Washington, D.C. then retired and moved to Punta Gorda, FL in 1988.
Norm served a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy (1951 – 1956). He received his degrees from the University of Maryland (B.A., MED. +). He was a secondary school teacher and administrator in the Prince George’s County Public Schools.
In 1954 Norm married his high school sweetheart, June Schauf. Over the years, he and his family and friends made many camping trips throughout the United States and Canada. After retirement, he and June enjoyed boating with the Burnt Store Isles Boat Club, and cruising the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. They also made a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. They made many return trips to visit and reminisce with their family and friends back in Maryland.
He was a Master Mason (Camp Springs, MD 227) and he was a member of the American Legion (Port Charlotte 110), Punta Gorda Elks (2606), the Burnt Store Isles Boat Club, the First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda, FL, and a small group ministry known as the “Growth Group.”
As a caring and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, Norm will be dearly missed by his daughter, Cindy (Dave) Vovakes of Aiken, SC and Punta Gorda, FL; son, Bruce (Helen) Jones of Westminster, Md; four grandchildren, Brian (Sarah) Tanner, Bradley (Rachael) Tanner, Alicia Jones, Bill Jones; six great grandchildren, Jack, Caroline, Nora, Vera , Violet, Natalie; sister, Sylvia (George) Bachman; sisters-in-law, Virginia Settle, Peggy (Bill) Settle, Judy Schauf; brother-in-law, Dan (Cheri) Schauf. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 66 years, June Jones.
A Memorial Service in celebration of Norm’s life will be held in the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda, FL on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
A Committal Service with Military Honors will be held Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at 2:30 p.m. at the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL.
