Brad was born on May 27, 1939, in Concord, NH, to Charles M. and Margaret (Demers) Smith. The family moved to Laconia, NH, when he was 6. He grew up on Dartmouth Street and graduated from Laconia High School in June, 1957. Following high school, Brad furthered his education at Fryeburg Academy. He graduated from Plymouth State College in June 1963.
During his time at Plymouth, Brad met his first wife, Maureen Carey. They were married for 33 years. Together, they raised two children, Kathy and Chris. After Maureen's passing, Brad married Constance (Connie) Smith in 1998.
Brad was known for his incredible work ethic from a young age. At just 14, he began working part-time for a neighbor, which instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility and dedication. During his high school years, he worked diligently delivering prescriptions for Story Drug Store. Throughout college summers, Brad supported himself as a delivery driver for Weeks Dairy.
Brad found his professional passion in the restaurant business. He moved to Greenfield to follow his dream of owning a restaurant. He established Brad's Place in the early 1970s. Later, he acquired Denny's Pantry. Cooking was not just a profession for Brad, it was a way to connect with people. He loved nothing more than preparing meals and engaging in lively conversations with customers, often discussing sports and local events.
Even after retiring from full-time work, Brad remained active. He found joy in working part-time at Polly's Pancake House in Sugar Hill, NH, where he continued to share his love for food and socialization. He also helped prepare pancake breakfasts and spaghetti dinners with the Knights of Columbus while in Florida.
Outside of work, Brad had a rich and fulfilling life. He had a deep love of golfing, skiing, the beach, boating and fishing, which he enjoyed with family and friends. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren in CO and MA.
Among his survivors are his wife Constance Smith of Punta Gorda, FL and her two children, Melissa J. Weinacker of Punta Gorda, Florida, and Stephen R. Morrissey of Macon, Georgia. His two children, Kathy (Nick) Ferrecchia of Westborough, MA and Chris (Annie Gittings) Smith of Denver, CO. Also, he is survived by his grandchildren: Graham, Caroline, Jack and Ryan; his brother Chick (Pam) Smith; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Brad will be remembered for his positive spirit and love for life that touched everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. A small private service will be held at a later date in Greenfield, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to St. Jude Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee or Tidewell Hospice House in Port Charlotte, Florida.
