I remember many Sunday nights at the old Pueblo Speedway cheering on 32.  I can shed some light on the people in the picture of the stock car.  The person to the right of Jim I beleiove is my stepdad, Dick Schroeder.  The shorter person with glasses is "Shorty" Dickson or Dickenson.   I don'nt know the person in the cap, or the person on the far left.

After a long day of washing construction vehicles,  Dad lined them up for a picture at the family home on Goodnight Ave. In Pueblo.

I found some old photos at Dads house and wanted to share them with everyone. 

Jim was my Grandma's (Margaret Fisher) neighbor for many years. I spent almost every weekend at my Grandma's as a kid. There were a few times that she held a yard sale and I would sell lemonade. Jim would always come and buy a cup. 

I also remember numerous occasions that he helped my Grandma by snow blowing her driveway or other projects around the house. 

He was a great man. Our condolences to the Carty family.

   I have to say that, out of all the wonderful memories I have of dad and our family, are the ones we all shared in Westcliffe, Colorado. Specifically, at Lake DeWeese. This is were us kids learned how to camp, fish, swim, water ski, and socialize. Dad was related to the people who owned and operated the lodge at the lake, Bill & Doris McCarty. 
   We would leave from home Friday afternoon with dad driving the truck hauling the overhead camper and pulling the boat. We couldn't get five kids and two adults in the cab of the truck, so a few of us kids would ride in the camper. Off we go, west on highway 96, thru Wetmore, up the winding Hardscrabble pass to the top, then thru Silvercliffe and Westcliffe, on to the lake.
    No sooner did dad get the truck stopped at the lake's edge, us kids were headed to the lake with fishing gear in hand eager to catch that first trout! We spent hours, upon hours, fishing that lake and playing around the large rock piles. 
   Later in the evening, about dark, we would be starving and needing something to eat, so off we go to find dad and mom in the lodge. Dad worked with Bill serving drink's behind the bar, and mom helped Doris in the kitchen cooking meals for the customers. Mom would see us coming and serve up a plate of the daily special. Mom and Doris made the best homemade pies in the world!
   When us boys got older, we were able to spend our summer's living and working at the lodge.  Memories for a lifetime!

Dad was a big influence in my life as a "Gear-Head" that liked working on anything mechanical.  
I remember helping dad "tune-up" the race car in the driveway, he would have me sit in the race car seat and rev-up the motor as he tweaked on the carburetor...until the engine purred like a kitten and roared like a lion!
All of us boys helped around the house always doing all kinds of projects from servicing the construction vehicles, mowing the lawn, building shelves, painting, cleaning out the warehouse and pulling weeds...!  I still hate pulling weeds to this day!!! 
I remember building my 1st Ford flat-head motor from the pieces in a box on the floor, Dad said "it better start right up and run good, or you're gonna get it!"  Well it took me a few days of putting everything together and when he hit the start button, the engine came to life and ran great!  Thankfully I didn't "get it!"
It was working on the engines and vehicles that really came into play during my junior year in high school.  I convinced Dad to help me buy a 1940 Ford pickup (my 1st vehicle) from a neighbor up the street and let me re-build it into a street rod.
Thanks to years of Dad's training, I spent months taking that truck apart down to the bare frame and began cleaning, sand-blasting metal parts, painting, and carefully re-assembling that truck back to a beautiful "fast" hot rod with a small block Chevy engine... wow, I loved that truck!
Once I graduated high school, I joined the Navy to be trained to work on jet aircraft and spent the next 21 years working and traveling around the world for Uncle Sam!
Today, thanks to helping Dad with so many things, I am blessed to be able to "fix anything" according to my loving wife Marlene!  She is always wanting this or that fixed, so I get to put my mechanical/repair skills to work almost daily!
Thank you Dad for giving me the love of "fixin' things!"

James "Jim" Carty is survived by his children: Ralph, Chris, Charles, and Peggy; his grandchildren: Marsha McDermott, Brian Carty, Nichole Thomas, Crystal Provost, Heidi Choat, and Lisa Jefferies; 15 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and his sister Joan Smith.
