It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Edna Caroline Vargas. She died peacefully in her home surrounded by loving family and friends Feb. 26, 2021. Edna was 86 years of age and was a successful, independent and loving woman of her time.
She is preceded in death by son; Nick Anthony Vargas and brothers; Fred and Ron Chavez including her parents; Sarah and Jose P. Chavez. She is survived by her children, Marc Vargas (Terri) of Ft Collins, Denise Vargas, Bill Vargas (Jean) both of Pueblo, plus her granddaughter, Sage Comora. She has three beloved sisters; Catherine Ruedas, Linda Archuleta of Pueblo, Anita Compos of Denver. Edna had several nieces and nephew.
Edna grew up in the Pueblo community of Salt Creek. She rose above poverty, sailed high above prejudice and built a successful and wonderful life. Growing up in the barrio during The Great Depression was hard for Edna, but she was tougher. There was no challenge she could not overcome. For example, during the war years she left high school to help support the family. Later she returned to get her GED and eventually pursued college courses in computer science. She raised four children, and her granddaughter. She retired from the First National Bank of Pueblo in addition to a second retirement from Evraz , the former Colorado Fuel and Iron. She was proud of her strong work ethics and always ready to roll up her sleeves and get to work.
She was active in the Pueblo Cameo Club and the Genealogy Society of Hispanic America. She participated in the Latino History Project which highlighted the Mexican/American culture and history of Salt Creek. She enjoyed genealogy and researched her family tree and presented her work at the Pueblo Historical Museum. She also contributed to the Hearts and Souls of Roselawn, a brief description of her life in Salado and honored her family members buried at Roselawn Cemetery.
Edna enjoyed travelling. She visited Mexico City and the pyramids of Yucatan. Her last trip was to Hawaii. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and family for holidays. Christmas was her favorite. She made the best green chili and potato salad. In her younger days she was known as the best el grito or the scream of joy during a spirited celebration.
In closing, the family would like to say thank you for the constant prayers and support from her circle of friends and family, during her illness. It was deeply felt and appreciated. We would also like to thank the Sangre de Cristo Hospice & Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to this non-profit organization.
