Paul Corrigan of Dayville, Connecticut and Clearwater, Florida, and formerly of Greenville, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2022, three days shy of his 100th birthday, a milestone he had recently celebrated with his extended family and friends.
The son of the late Elsie and Paul Corrigan, he was born in North Merrick, Long Island, New York. He is survived by his brother Richard (Ann); four children, Paul (Louise), Kevin (Sheila), Michael (Flora) and Mary Jane Rochford; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition, Paul was the foster father to 12 loved children spanning over more than a decade.
Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife and dance partner of 76 years, Mary Jane (Loney), son Timothy, brothers Walter and Gene, sister Betty, daughter-in-law Betty and son-in-law Robert.
Paul was a proud Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific on the USS Puget Sound during WWII. Following his discharge as Technical Sergeant, Marine Air Casual Squadron - 4, Air Depot Miramar, San Diego, California, he returned home to Long Island, New York to raise his family, eventually taking over his father’s plumbing business, and later working as a building inspector for the City of New York until his retirement. He was a member of Hose 1 Roosevelt, NY Fire Department and the Roosevelt Rum Pointers Drum and Bugle Corps, where he played drums and served as drum major.
His greatest joy was doting on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were enamored with his boundless enthusiasm for playing card games, attending sporting events and recitals, folding newspaper hats, pouring imaginary tea, and making coins appear behind a cloud of cigar smoke. In addition to spending time with family, Paul enjoyed wood crafting, playing bocce and shuffleboard, traveling the country with his square dance family, partying with his friends at Riviera Estates, solving Soduku puzzles and scratching lottery tickets on his front porch.
Visitation will be held Friday 9:30-10:30 a.m. from the Pontarelli-Marino Home, 971 Branch Ave, Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Augustine Church, 639 Mt. Pleasant Ave, Providence. Graveside burial with military honors will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
