Manuel J. Soares

Born in Faja de Cima, Sao Miguel, Portugal, he was a son of the late Jose and Clara (Vivieros) Soares; husband of Maria Luisa (Matias) Soares for 59 years; father of Francisco “Frank” Soares, Manuel J. Soares Jr., Martha M. Brassil and Suzette M. Cook; grandfather of 8; great-grandfather of 1; and brother of the late Antonio V. Soares, Jose M. Soares, Jesuina DaSilva and Belmira Oliveira.

Manuel had been a meat cutter for Johnston Beef before working in the Roger Williams Greenhouse for the City of Providence Parks Department. He was a devoted and faithful parishioner of Holy Rosary Church, serving as a trustee for many years. He was also a founding member of the church’s Holy Spirit Society.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, 4-7 p.m. with funeral services on Thursday at 8:45 a.m. from the PONTARELLI-MARINO Home, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence, followed by burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.
