East Greenwich Joan "Joey" (Payne) Cannon, 81, of East Greenwich passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 21, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was the wife of Jeremiah H. Cannon. They were married for 54 years.Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Providence City Councilman Thomas L. Payne and Kathleen J. (Mullen) Payne. She was a city resident until moving with her family to East Greenwich in 1977. She was a communicant of St. Gregory the Great parish in Warwick.Joey, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was a 1946 graduate of Classical High School and a 1947 graduate of the former Katharine Gibbs School. She became a Registered Nurse following her February 1952 graduation from the former Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing. She worked at the former Dr. Charles V. Chapin Hospital during the 1950's polio epidemic and at the former Providence Lying-In Hospital. Upon her retirement from active nursing in the mid 1970's, she worked for the Cranston Police Department.It was her family that gave Joey her greatest joy. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three sons: Jeremiah H., Jr. of Wakefield, Thomas P. of Porter Ranch, CA and Peter L. Cannon, II of East Greenwich and her two daughters: Suzanne M. Cannon of East Greenwich and Sheila K. M. Bowden of Narragansett, son-in-law Jeffrey M. Bowden and daughters-in-law Ellen K. Cannon, Janice D. Cannon and Linda Lee. She was the cherished grandmother of nine: Kevin H. and Kristen E. Cannon, Sean J. and Caroline J. Bowden, Connery L. and Victoria M. Cannon, and Maximus L., Liana L. and Bliss L. Cannon. She is also survived by her brothers: Dr. Thomas L. Payne, Jr. and Richard S. Payne and her two sisters: M. Patricia Fleck and Mavis A. Perkins.Her funeral will be held Saturday, at 8:00 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence (02908) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am, in St. Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick. Burial will follow in Rhode Island Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Friday 4 - 8 pm.
