Claire A. Good

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1926 to George and Emily (Ivan and Minnie) Deveau, Claire was one of five sisters, along with a brother who grew up in the house their father built.  

Claire was a smart and diligent student and excelled at Notre Dame de Pity High School.  She was the winner of the city-wide French spelling championship sponsored by the Boston Herald American newspaper in 1942.  Her own children, Edward Good, Mary Ellen Good, Sharon Holland, Andrea Fournier, Susan Lowney, and Matthew Good were often regaled with French sayings, songs and spelling words growing up in Claire’s house.  Claire married Matt, a decorated WWII Veteran in 1948, and they started and raised their family in Cambridge until emigrating to Warwick, RI in 1957.

This move seemed uncharacteristic for Claire, but it was actually more typical of her adventurous spirit than not.  She boldly became the first female sibling in her family to obtain her driver’s license, an accomplishment deemed unnecessary for women of the day.  Later in life, Claire and Matt traveled and lived briefly in California and spent many years temporarily in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.

Claire was the matriarch of her family which included six children, eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, Warwick, RI from 9:00 to 10:00 am on Thursday, September 27, 2018 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown.  Burial will follow alongside her husband, Matt, at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery  in Exeter.
