He transitioned peacefully and was surrounded by family. Charles was known as a funny, fun loving individual who would tell you how it is and how it should be. He was always honest, direct and you would always know what was on his mind. If you knew him for five minutes or fifty years, you could be a target of his directness and charismatic personality.
Charles was always a hard worker and has been working since the age of thirteen. He had several different jobs, until he learned his craft and talent as a Screen Printer. He decided to invest in himself and he created his business Gibbs Screen Printing. He would print clothing and other merchandise to hundreds of local businesses, sports teams and family events. He was passionate about the work he did and he would work in his shop from sunup to sundown to meet deadlines.
Charles was far from wealthy, but he was a Philanthropist and would donate hundreds of dollars worth of items to families or organizations in need.
Charles also worked as a Parking Enforcement Officer with the City of Providence, RI for several years and retired in 2019. He was known by many as “The Ticketman.” He worked mainly on Broad St and had several connections with local businesses in the area. Since he was such a character with a vibrant personality, he was selected to be in the hit show Parking Wars on A&E (Season 6 Episode 2, 5 and Season 7 Episode 17). Charles was well known as a local celebrity and was featured in a mural titled The Plaza of Arts and Culture South Side Providence on Broad St painted by Agustin Patino in 2007. This mural is a representation of the culture and diversity of Providence, RI.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Henry Gibbs and Geleatea Gibbs (Belcher) of Providence RI.
He was survived by his wife Vivian Marie Gibbs (Lee) of Providence, RI daughter, Nicole Georgina Gibbs of Norfolk, VA, two son’s Charles Eugene Gibbs, Jr and Eugene Charles Gibbs. Charles was survived by five brothers and two sisters, David Gibbs of Newport, RI, Gary Gibbs. Richard Gibbs, Vincent Gibbs and John Mosby, Lisa Gibbs all of Providence, RI and Linnette Gibbs of Greensboro, NC. Charles (Poppy) also leaves behind four grandchildren, Andres Charles Gibbs, Aiyana Lynn Brown, Kori Christine Gibbs and Karlie Nicole Gibbs, former wife Denise Tavares and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Last but not least, Charles left behind his beloved animals Chance Gibbs, Rico Gibbs and Jackson Gibbs all of Providence, RI.
