Tom was born in San Diego, California on August 31, 1934 to Oscar Moody and Elizabeth Harriet (Pierce) Smallwood.
He lived in the Southern California area, including Catalina Island, until his enlistment in the US Navy at the age of 17. He served on the USS Piedmont in the Korean War conflict from April 1952 to September 1954, being honorably discharged.
He married Matilda “Boots” Palmer in San Bernardino, California on March 1, 1957. Boots passed away in 2009 after a long bout with cancer. Tom and Boots enjoyed outdoor activities with their three children, traveling the Western United States. Tom had a love for motorcycles, riding his Harley Davidson until he was 77. He also enjoyed playing his guitar and had a lovely baritone voice.
Tom’s early career was in California with the San Bernardino Water Works. He then entered employment in the banking industry as a mail clerk and rose to the position of branch manager upon retirement from Wells Fargo Bank in Prineville. In 1980, he and Boots moved to Burns, Oregon where they owned and operated the Coast-to-Coast Hardware store.
Tom is survived by his son; Stephen Vincent Smallwood (Tami) of Burns, Oregon
daughter; Kelly Joi Smallwood of Prineville, Oregon; brother, Harry Smallwood of Beaumont, California; sister, Donna Jean Smallwood Ammon of Idaho Falls, Idaho,
8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Boots Smallwood; their son, James Smallwood; parents, Oscar and Elizabeth Smallwood; and his siblings, Thel and Lucky Smallwood.
A memorial service will be held with Military Honors; Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the V.F.W. Hall Post #4108, 1836 SW Veterans Way, in Redmond, Oregon. Merle Jackson will officiate.
