With great sadness, we announce the loss of Judy Johnson, our beloved Mom, Grandma, and friend to many. She leaves behind sons Gordon Hilder and Chris Johnson; sister Gwen Buchanan; five grandchildren; many friends; and her poodle Rush.
Judy was born in Vancouver, BC, and spent many fulfilling years raising a family on Vancouver Island. She later moved to Lac Le Jeune, and for the last 20 years lived in Prince George. Judy spent most of her professional life managing travel agencies. She loved working with people and of course the free travel! Following retirement, Judy was always busy. She volunteered at the Hart Pioneer Centre, both working in the office and serving on the board, she was a representative on the Council of Seniors, and she found time to make sandwiches for the homeless. In her later years, JJ, as she was known, developed a passion for carpet bowling. She enjoyed the competitive tournaments, including the provincial championships and the BC Seniors Games, but also playing for fun and friendship.
Nearly three and a half years ago, Judy was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. She experienced much adversity in life, but like the other setbacks, she didn't let cancer change who she was or define how she wanted to live. Through that time, Judy cared for family, Rush, and friends, kept carpet bowling, and maintained a garden.
We want to thank the tireless health-care workers that provided Mom with more time and made her last months comfortable. The homecare nurses were always available to help, and provided a healthcare lifeline during COVID. A special thanks to the Phoenix Pharmacy - Curt and the staff knew Judy by name and were quick to answer any and all questions. Dr. Hunter was compassionate and understanding, and helped navigate Judy and the family through a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Near the end, Dr. Qalbani made house calls and found the time to listen to a very ill, old woman that had very little standing in the midst of a global pandemic. And finally, we thank the wonderful staff at the Rotary Hospice House. They treated Judy with dignity and helped us through the most difficult days of the disease. Judy's passing will sadden many. However, she focused on love and friendship, and ensured Christmas cards were written right up until the end! Please smile when remembering your time with her.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the BC Cancer Foundation, the Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society or the BC SPCA.
