Theresa Lipscomb Owens, age 87, passed away on Sunday, May 5th, 2019 at her Deatsville home following a brief illness. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James B. Owens, her daughter Anne Barbero (Russ) of Deatsville, her son James T. Owens (Vicki Young) of Dallas, Georgia, her six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, along with her two sisters, Sylvia L. Cox of Autaugaville, and Vivian L. Tatum of Montgomery. She was the daughter of T.J. and Carrie Edna (Jones) Lipscomb of Autaugaville. After graduating from Hicks Memorial High School in Autaugaville, she attended Massey Draughon Business School in Montgomery, distinguishing herself as an outstanding student.
She met her husband, James, who was the Trailways bus driver for her daily commutes to Montgomery from Autaugaville.
Theresa retired in 1993 after twenty-nine years with the Alabama High School Athletic Association. There was a time when you could name a high school in Alabama and she could recall the size of the school, what county it was located in, and even name the principal and head coaches from memory. She enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, and RV'ing across the United States until she suffered a disabling stroke in 2012. Since 1962, she was an active and faithful member of the Prattmont Church of Christ where she was known for her hospitality and generous spirit. She embodied the description of the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31.
A visitation will be at 10 am on Thursday, May 9th at Ridout's Prattville Chapel, Prattville Alabama, with a funeral service at 11am, with Bryan Gibson officiating. The pallbearers will be her grandsons Josh Owens and Daniel Owens, her great grandsons Caleb Owens and Drew Rodriguez, and her grandsons-in-law Joe Rodriguez and Ben Fuller. There will be a brief graveside service immediately following at Oak Hill Cemetery in Prattville.
