ASKINS, Martha Beatrice, 86, a lifelong Prattville resident, passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2010. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 10:00 AM at Ridout’s Prattville Chapel with Dr. Leroy Stringfield officiating. Burial will follow in Prattville Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Affectionately known as “Aunt Batch” or “Aunt Bea”, she was born on November 26, 1923 to the late Bill and Ada McDonald DeRamus. She loved to garden, the outdoors, and had a passion for cooking and home canning fruits and vegetables. She worked for over thirty years for Gillespie-Durdin Chevrolet, was a long time tax preparer for many businesses and individuals, was an active member of the Genealogical Society, and along with her husband, was a member of the Boll Weevil Camping Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Askins, a brother and sister, Billy DeRamus and Elizabeth Owens. Survivors include five nephews: Larry Owens and his wife, Betty Sue, Tommy DeRamus, Marty Owens and his wife, Sharon, Greg Walker and his wife, Felicja, and Jimmy Walker; four nieces and their husbands, Sharon and Bruce Willis, Ann and James Burdette, Tammy and Ken Motley, Paula and Dean Argo, two sisters-in-law, Kathryn Golson and Alice DeRamus, and a host of great nieces, great nephews, great- great nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her great nephews, James Burdette, James Owens, Larry Wayne Owens, Jeffery DeRamus, Cody DeRamus, Leo Motley, and Joshua Argo. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews Tommy DeRamus, Larry Owens, Marty Owens, Greg Walker, Jimmy Walker, Dean Argo, and the Staff of Hickory Hill Assisted Living, for which the family wishes to extend a special word of thanks.
