Many of us will recall serving alongside Tygh throughout his 40+ years with the Sheriff’s Office. From his earlier start as an explorer at age 14, his service as a reserve, a deputy who loved working the west end of the county, his lengthy tenure as the range master, to his final assignment as a Training Sergeant, several will remember a lesson learned or a funny story with Tygh. For many years Tygh served as an advisor to the Sheriff's Office explorer post. Through his hard work, innovation, and expertise he was instrumental in developing one of the most respected search and rescue posts in the Pacific Northwest. Tygh touched the lives of many who went on to have careers in public service. His work with Explorer Post 877 was recognized several times by the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association and the Boy Scouts of America. He worked for five elected Sheriffs; Barnes, Probstfield, Spinden, Gordon and Garrett.
Tygh's gift as a teacher and his ability to connect a story with his instruction for the IFAST (Interagency Firearms and Safety Training) program were well regarded. Tygh spent a significant amount of his own time and money at the start of the firearms program (IFAST) attending national training and then returning to design and build training props to enhance the learning experience for students. He shared his expertise with the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training in Salem, Oregon. His work in developing firearms training was recognized multiple times by DPSST and the Oregon State Sheriff's Association.
More importantly, Tygh will be remembered as a man who dearly loved his family and friends. He was a wonderful husband to soulmate Karlene, a mentor to daughter Michelle, a great father-in-law to Eric, and a doting grandfather to Brinley. As a family they enjoyed spending time at their cabin, 4-wheeling in beautiful central Oregon, and hosting annual family reunions. He was predeceased by his loving parents and sister.
