Life is an adventure! On August 19, 1954, Philip Stewart Huserik was born to Frank and Ramona Huserik, and the adventure began. Philip was born in Portland, Oregon and spent his entire life living in the Skyline area, also known as "the hill".
Philip's early years were spent playing on the family farm and exploring the nearby woods. The brothers would be gone for hours, looking for lost cabins and sulfur springs. He attended Skyline School for eight years and then moved onto Lincoln High School, where he participated in track and cross country. He might not have been the fastest, but he was the most inspirational three years in a row. Phil once ran a marathon just to see if he could do it. His college years were spent at Seattle Pacific where he earned a double degree in both math and business. He had a GPA of 3.89, confirming what we all knew...he was the most motivated of the brothers. The story of the missing A was that Phil was not willing to take his floor mates advise to have tea with Ms. Reed, professor of required Old/New Testament, and give the false impression that he wanted to be a missionary. It cost him his 4.0 annual scholarship. It was during this time that he first met Janet, his future wife.
Philip spent summers picking berries and working for the neighbors in the nursery business at Motz and Son Nursery. In 1969 he joined the Skyline Fire Department as a volunteer. His service spanned over 25 years, pulling hose, later driving water tanker and fire apparatus. He ended his volunteer service as a lieutenant. More than one neighbor was glad to see him pull up in the truck.
After college he worked for Freightliner in accounts receivable, but was not happy. He moved onto Honda's main warehouse, and in under two years was managing the receiving docks. In 1990, he left Honda to work full-time at Huserik Brothers Nursery, which the three brothers had started in 1976. At the time of his death, he worked in the trees, managed the books, and kept the rest of us in line, or at least tried to! He loved working on the farm and watching the trees grow. It brought him a feeling of being closer to God out in the fields ....at least when the temperature was under 80!
Philip surprised us all when he reconnected with Janet some 27 years after they first met, and they began seeing one another. After a long distance relationship, they were married on July 31, 2004. They spent 14 wonderful years together at their house on McNamee Road. Family was so important to Phil, and Janet completed that for him. Family dinners at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter were very important to him. He treasured hosting Christmas Eve with Janet, in their home for the family. Uncle Phil wanted everyone to be there, and the nieces and nephews will truly miss his phone calls asking how they were and what they were doing.
Philip passed away on July 1, 2018, shortly before his 64th birthday. He is survived by his wife Janet Andrews-Huserik, their sons Byron Andrews (Laura Ryals) and Mark Andrews, Janet's family (Bassi), two brothers Anthony and Chris Huserik, two sister in-laws Katheryn and Kathleeen Huserik, and a host of Huserik nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by all, and the love and joy he brought to each of us.
A memorial service will be held at St Matthew Lutheran Church, 10390 SW Canyon Road, Beaverton, OR, on Saturday, July 28, 2018, 10am.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials given in Phil's name be presented to: Nursingale for medically fragile children in honor of his niece Sarah Rachelle Huserik at nursingale.org/donate.
