Mavis Delcieta Lewis was born June 20, 1927, in Mt. James, St. Andrew, Jamaica to Thomas and Susan Aspfall who preceded her in death, May 11, 2011 Mavis went to be with the Lord. Mavis is the fourth of seven children of which two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Mavis attended Mt. James primary school. After leaving with a 5th grade education, she helped her mother at home with the farm. She later did her own farming and sold her produce in the local market.
Mavis was one of the first people in the district to donate her property to build two churches, one of which is still standing. She always had a home full of love, enough to share with others. On a regular basis she had teachers, nurses, pastors and the like living with her. On Sunday's after church services Mavis would cook and feed the entire pastoral staff and their families. She was well loved in the community both for who she was and for her generous spirit.
Mavis migrated to Canada in October of 1974, where she worked as a nanny. In 1979 she then moved to the USA where she joined her brother and his family and met Douglas Lewis. She and Douglas were married June of 1989 and she continued to work as a nanny. Douglas and Mavis then moved to Oklahoma in 1995 where Mavis continued in her entrepreneurial efforts buying and selling in the market place. Her husband preceded her in death on February 2, 1999.
Mavis retired from the market place and moved to Portland, Oregon to be close to her only daughter and grandchildren. Her favorite hobbies were fishing, gardening, watching sitcoms, and spending time with friends. Mavis received the Lord as her personal Savior on April 19, 2011 and was able to say she now knew she was saved because she could smell Jesus.
Mavis leaves to cherish her memories her only daughter, Deloris Dallas and her husband, Rupert Dallas, Portland, Oregon along with seven grandchildren, Al, Abdul, Heather, Melissa, Rupert Jr., Davin, Triston; and nine great grandchildren, Xavier, Kinte, Kalob, Khloe, Kennedy, Khalila, Sean, Amira and Aurora. She also leaves her brother, Vincent Asfall and his wife, Esmie; brother, Kenneth Asfall, and a host of nieces and nephews and many more family members and friends who will miss her dearly. Mavis is known for her generosity as she was a tremendous giver and had a big heart. She is affectionately known as Mama, Mom, Aunt Mavis, and Aunt Mae. She will be missed but her memories will linger in our heart forever.
