Mary Velma Nabors was born February 21, 1939 in Port Barre, Louisiana to the union of the late Frank Nacoste Jr. and Helen Augustine. She was one of nine children.
In 1951, Mary (fondly known as Velma) moved to Boring, Oregon with her family. She spoke French Creole and learned English while attending Pleasant Valley Middle School. Velma developed a unique interest in a non-traditional hobby for females during her era in life. She crafted skills as a marksman and became a sharp shooter which led to her becoming a member of the National Riffle Association.
During her early twenties, Velma met and married Samuel J Nabors and from this union they raised five beautiful children: Christopher, Sabrina, Lori, Jeffrey and Jennifer. The marriage lasted over 54 years!
Velma loved fishing, traveling and ‘shopping’. Often you would find her enjoying one of those things. Through traveling, Velma embraced new things and became a master at trivia. Inspired by her native southern roots, Velma was an amazing cook and could make some of the best Dirty Rice, Gumbo, Candied Yams and Fried Chicken west of the Mississippi. A talent that will be sorely missed by her family and anyone who has had the pleasure to sit at her table for a home cooked meal.
Velma worked at Immaculate Heart Church for many years as well as tutored children at Vernon Elementary School in various subjects.
All of Velma’s life she possessed a special gift that she permanently will be remembered for. It was her open mind and believing in the good of people. She never jumped to conclusions or passed judgment without knowing the facts. She believed in giving people chances. She brought joy to those around her and created a warm and loving home. Her love and caring nature was even more amplified when you were sick. She always had the motherly touch. Her presence alone was comforting but she always had the right remedy to make you feel better.
Velma is survived by her husband Samuel J. Nabors; her children: Christopher Evens, Sabrina Robinson, Lori Nicholson, Jeffrey Nabors and Jennifer Arias-Gonzales; her sister: Kathrine Nacoste-Dorris; her brother: Joseph Nacoste; her grandchildren: Valerie Nabors, Nichole Feng, Jazmine Mason, Anthony Nabors, Bryan Nabors, Stephen Nabors, Cheri Smith, Stephanie Ayers, Jeremy Vargas, Kieran Arias Nabors and a host of great grandchildren, Nieces, Neph-ews, other relatives and friends.
Velma is preceded in death by Frank and Helen Nacoste, Lubertha Nacoste, Mary Hayes, James Nacoste and nephews: David Stewart and Richard Minnifield Jr.
Velma Nabors (AKA “The Mother”) will remain in our hearts forever...
